Sparkleberrys Home and Garden

At Sparkleberrys Home and Garden (Sparkleberrys), home d├ęcor items, plants and flowers are just the beginning. A new destination, Sparkleberrys features unique, custom pieces made by local artisans. The one of a kind items include handmade jewelry, stained glass, hand painted porcelain, painted cottage furniture, photography, handcrafted wooden pieces and more.
In keeping with the shop's mission to promote local talents, each featured artisan works a regular shift in the shop. "You'll meet a different artisan each time you come," says Shelley Trussell, who co-owns Sparkleberrys with her husband, Greg Trussell.
Ten artisans are currently displaying their wares, and the list is growing. New artisans are evaluated the third Thursday of each month. Those interested can call ahead for an application to have their pieces reviewed. In the future, the Trussells hope to offer in-store workshops by local artisans as well.
The Trussells are often asked how they chose the concept for their new business. As it turns out, the business chose them, in a sense. As owners of Hartford Farm in Upton, they were interested in starting a new venture to supplement their seasonal business. They decided to buy the quaint property in nearby Northbridge, although they weren't yet sure what type of business it would become. As winter approached, they put some Christmas trees out front for sale while considering their options. Within days, a local artisan stopped in to ask if she could display her handmade mittens for sale alongside the trees. Then another wandered in, asking to display handcrafted wreaths, and another, interested in selling woven scarves. One after another, the unique items brought in for display were purchased by shoppers happy to find quality, handmade items, and the idea for the Trussells' new business was born.
The Trussells think people want an alternative to shopping at chain stores, and will welcome the chance to come in and be surprised by Sparkleberrys' ever-changing offerings. "I believe that people are looking for something special that they're not going to get anywhere else," says Shelley. And if for some reason they don't find what they're after at Sparkleberrys, there's a good chance that one of the artisans can make it. Special orders are encouraged.
Sparkleberrys is located at 1790 Quaker St., Northbridge, close to Mendon and Upton. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All are invited to the Grand Opening event on Saturday June 18 featuring refreshments, free gifts, drawings and a chance to meet the artisans.
