WHEELOCK ASSOCIATES

Architect Philip Wheelock of Wheelock Associates in Uxbridge.

With more than 20 years of practice, Architect Philip Wheelock finds that modern materials and technology make it possible for people to get the light, space and living environment they want---without busting their budget, and without busting out the walls of the house.
"Energy costs are major factors in current architecture," says Wheelock, whose office is in Uxbridge. "People can't afford anymore to heat five thousand square feet houses. I can show people how to alter the space in 1600 to 2100 square feet houses to maximize space, light and comfort."
Because of increasingly efficient heating and cooling systems, Wheelock says there are more ways than ever before to create usable space and ample light: "If you have a heating system more than 20 years old, you need to consider updating it. The new construction will then be designed to take advantage of current heating and cooling technologies."
Using time-proven pen and ink illustrations, supplemented by computer-aided design programs, Wheelock shows his clients proposed plans and three-dimensional images of their ideas for a new house or for renovations to an existing one. "I can often suggest that they can go smaller than they may first think they need," Wheelock says.
Wheelock's inspiration to become an architect began at an early age when he saw the implementation of his family home on Henry St., Uxbridge by his aunt Catherine Warren, herself an architect. Based on her design, an interior wall between the living and dining rooms was removed, flooding the opened areas with natural light and fresh air.
Wheelock emphasizes his commitment to collaboration with his clients, and whenever possible with potential contractors, to achieve the desired results. His work is principally with homeowners, but he has done commercial, academic and medical building designs.
Wheelock is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and in 1999 earned a master of architecture degree from Cornell University. Before opening his own firm in 2001, he worked for firms in Boston for more than nine years.
With the current lull in new construction, Wheelock is often on the road. His clients range across most of the New England states, and he has had clients in Canada, Maine and Texas. His designs include plans for new construction or renovation of coastal sea cottages and lake houses.
