ZOOK CUSTOM KITCHENS

Loren Zook, owner of Zook Custom Kitchens in Mendon, stands alongside samples of his custom cabinetry.

Loren Zook, owner of Zook Custom Kitchens, is one of those fortunate individuals who does what he truly loves for a living. Zook builds and installs custom kitchen cabinetry using native hardwoods, such as oak, maple and cherry. He also refaces existing cabinetry and builds bathroom vanities, built-in book cases and entertainment centers.
Zook learned his craft while working at Hillside Furniture, the family business his father operated in Mendon for many years. He initially built furniture, but over time, he developed a passion for custom kitchen cabinetry. So after the family furniture business closed its doors in 2008, Zook decided the time was right to strike out on his own, opening Zook Custom Kitchens in the very same location at the start of 2011.
Zook meets personally with clients to provide a free in-home consultation. To get a true feel for the quality of his craftsmanship, customers can also visit the showroom to view numerous samples of woods, cabinet styles and finishes. Once a design is determined, Zook uses a software program to render a 3D image of the finished space for customers to view before the work begins.
From there, Zook moves ahead with the building and installation. In his view, there's no point in building a good custom piece of cabinetry if it's not installed well, which is why he handles all his own installations. "I want to make sure it's done right," he says.
Zook suggests there are many advantages to using his services. First is the quality of his product, made from veneer core plywood. Second is the workmanship. Zook takes great satisfaction in building each piece to fit a customer's space, rather than relying on filler strips to squeeze standard cabinets into non-standard spaces. And finally, there is unlimited flexibility that comes with building a custom piece. "The sky is the limit for options," he says.
People may assume a custom kitchen is more expensive than buying from a large chain. But in Zook's experience, that is not always true. "If you add extras or upgrades at the larger stores, prices rise fast," he says. Many of those "extras" are included as standard features by Zook, such as dove-tail drawer boxes and under mount soft-closing slides. As a result, he feels his prices remain competitive.
Zook Custom Kitchens is located at 21 Milford St., in Mendon, next to the Mendon Drive-In. The showroom is open by appointment only. For more information, or to schedule a free consultation, call 508-280-6127 or email zck@abcmailbox.net.
