Colella’s Supermarket

Colella's has remained a family business since opening in
Hopkinton in 1945. The store's current owners are, l-r, Colella sisters Sandra Varnum, Dale Danahy, and Diane McGrath (not pictured), daughters of the store's founder, Daniel Colella.

Colella's Supermarket (Colella's) has been a fixture in Hopkinton since 1945 when it was first opened by Daniel Colella. Today, it offers groceries, meats, deli items, produce, bakery goods and a complete selection of beer, wine and liquor in a pleasant shopping environment. Colella's is a family business in every sense, with seven members of the Colella family currently on staff. Pictures of the changing storefront line the walls as a tribute to the store's longevity in this community.
While much has changed through the years, this full service grocery store manages to stay current by adapting to meet the needs of its customers. President Dale Danahy, daughter of the store's founder, says Colella's provides a more enjoyable shopping environment and better customer service than the large grocery chains, without compromising on price and variety. "We regularly compare prices to stay competitive, and we take customer requests, and get what they want if we can," says Danahy.
The deli features Boars Head meats, cheeses and delicious salads, with sandwiches made to order on fresh rolls. A self-service lunch case includes six hot offerings daily. Customers can take lunch on the go, or eat in the comfortable café area, a favorite meeting spot where customers enjoy the freshly brewed Red Barn Coffee products.
While most grocery stores buy precut meats which have been vacuum sealed in advance, Colella's buys whole steers which are cut fresh on the premises by Colella's butchers. "We grind our meat daily," says Danahy, to ensure its freshness. Convenient take out dinners such as prepared rotisserie chicken, ribs and ham with sides and rolls included are a nice option offered for busy families on the go.
For dessert, the bakery case holds plenty of tempting treats, many of which are made from scratch each morning.
The produce department features numerous items from local growers, such as Kelly's Farm of Upton and Breezeland Orchards of Warren. "We love working with local companies," says Danahy.
Renovations have recently been completed, updating the store from top to bottom. One thing here hasn't changed though. When shopping is complete, a bagger is on hand to carry your groceries out and put them in your car, just as they've done here for the past 67 years.
Colella's Supermarket is located at 61 Main St. in Hopkinton, at the corner of Routes 135 and 85. Hours are Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.colellas.com
