Golden Pond / Golden Goose Academy

Charlotte St. Pierre (left), who attends the Golden Goose Academy, visits Golden Pond resident Helen Bartlett (center), along with Emma Spiro (right), whose mother is a visiting nurse there.

Entering the Golden Pond facility feels like walking into a warm, inviting home. And that's just what the staff is aiming to provide for the residents who live here in this unique assisted living facility located in the beautiful, wooded area along Golden Pond in Hopkinton.
As Director of Marketing Shelley Ryan describes it, many of the residents are quite self-sufficient, but living on their own just wasn't the best scenario any longer. Whether it was the driving, the grocery shopping, the housecleaning, or some combination, it just became too much for them. And by coming to Golden Pond, they've been able to regain much of their independence.
Established 20 years ago, Golden Pond is a privately owned facility where residents are well cared for by highly trained, dedicated staff. They also enjoy the many amenities, such as the exercise room, beauty salon, sunroom, and library, as well as gourmet meals served in the beautiful dining room. Both cognitive and physical activities are available, including computer classes, movies, musical entertainment, crafts, and exercise classes. "We work really hard to be sure people are enjoying their golden years and feeling as healthy and active as they can," says Ryan. The staff partners with several agencies to bring in services for residents, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and diabetic care. A separate area is dedicated to residents with mid-stage dementia. There is also a secure unit for geriatric psychiatric patients coping with issues such as depression. A new building is in the works with one and two bedroom apartments, a gymnasium, and a more permanent site for many of the medical staff who currently offer their services on a visiting basis, such as primary care physicians.
But perhaps the most unique offering at Golden Pond is the daily opportunity for residents to interact with the young people enrolled in the Golden Goose Academy located on the lower level. The Golden Goose provides child care for ages one month through six years from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. "It's a place where kids can come learn and grow in a happy, healthy environment," says Director Linda Mesite.
In addition to scheduled intergenerational activities, there are countless times when residents can interact with the children on an informal basis, by stopping for a visit, reading them a book, or helping with a craft. These interactions are a boost for both the residents and the children. "It's more like a great big family, as opposed to a business," says Mesite.
Golden Pond is located at 50 West Main St., in Hopkinton. For further information on the assisted living and child care programs, visit www.assistedlivingatgoldenpond.com or call 508-435-1250.
