SkyHook Tree & Sons of South Grafton was founded in the late 1950's by Helge Magnusson, a Korean War veteran. While recuperating from a serious injury he suffered on an aircraft carrier, Helge decided to go to work cutting and trimming trees. After leaving the hospital, Helge bought a truck and a chainsaw and got to work earning $16 per acre of trees cut.
Looking ahead to expanding his tree work, Helge bought some ropes and climbing spikes and practiced in trees in a local park. While growing the business, he spent two years working nights at the post office, and days trimming and cutting trees.
In those first years, Helge's "staff" consisted of his wife, Ora, who would often drive his 10-ton International truck. He smiles as he recalls how the sight of a woman driving a big truck turned a lot of heads back then. He named his company "Skyhook", recalling that was the nickname that the carrier crew had given him for his role in assisting with take-offs and landings.
The Magnussons' daughter Kim and son Jay helped their father in his work, which had expanded to include tree removal, tree trimming, stump grinding and lot cleaning in two-dozen towns in Worcester County.
Helge retired in 1984, and the SkyHook Tree Company was inactive for the next 16 years. But then Jason, the Magnussons' third son, revived the company in 2000. Jason had worked in high-tech industries for 10 years. Sudden down-turns in high-tech prompted him to pick up where his father left off.
In Jason's hands, Skyhook remains a hands-on company. "I pour everything I have into the business," he says. He is on site for each job of his six full-time employees. He has invested extensively in large trucks, cherry pickers, cranes and other equipment to meet the needs of homeowners. The business is licensed, bonded, fully insured and available year round.
In the coming months. Skyhook crews will be working on hazardous tree removal, property and estate tree maintenance, lot clearing, tree trimming and ornamental pruning. Most of Skyhook's work is for private homeowners, but it has done work for community organizations in Upton, Grafton and Westboro. The company's motto is "We'd love to work for you".
