A Riveting Story of Survival during the Holocaust

Dr. Cesare Frustaci

On May 16, Milford Catholic Elementary School (MCES) had the privilege of listening to a very special guest speaker, Cesare Frustaci, grandfather of second grade student, Michael Keefe. Dr. Frustaci, who was born on July 14, 1936, in Napoli, told a riveting story of survival as a child of the Holocaust. During two emotional and heartfelt presentations – one to fifth and sixth grade students and one to faculty and adult guests – Dr. Frustaci eloquently gave details of the heartache and hardships he and his mother endured during the years 1938 to 1945 under the reign of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

Although baptized as a Roman Catholic, when the Italian government passed anti-Semitic laws and expelled foreign Jews, two-year-old Cesare and his mother, Margit Wolf, a Hungarian ballerina, were forced into a Jewish ghetto in Budapest, Hungary. In 1944, fearing for her young child's safety, Margit left Cesare outside the ghetto with his baptismal certificate. She was sent to a concentration camp in Germany, while Cesare did his best to survive on the streets. After liberation by the Russian army, the International Red Cross eventually found Cesare a new home in a Hungarian village, which is where his mother, who walked back to Hungary from Germany, found him two years later.

Cesare's father, Pasquale Frustaci, an Italian composer, searched in vain for years for his family, but was not able to locate them. Twenty years later they were finally reunited in Italy.

Today, Dr. Frustaci lives in Port Charlotte, Florida, where he regularly volunteers at the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida to share his amazing story with others as he did with MCES.
