Mendon Scouts Build New Pavilion to Celebrate 100 Years

During a cold and wet Saturday, Mendon's Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Crew, and their advisors began construction on a new pavilion at Memorial Park.

In an effort to commemorate the 100th year of Scouting, members of Mendon's Boy Scout Troops 1 and 44, Venture Crew, and Cub Scout Pack 1 wanted to create something that would benefit their community. As a result, over the weekend of June 11, construction began on a 20 foot by 40 foot pavilion to be used as a gathering spot by local residents. The pavilion is scheduled to be completed by the end of June—just in time for it to be enjoyed throughout the summer.

According to Venture Crew Advisor Aileen Sabin, a committee was formed some time ago to determine what type of project residents would be able to utilize and enjoy. Eventually, a pavilion at Memorial Park was decided on with the blessings of the Parks Department. In addition, landscaping around the area is also underway.

The new pavilion is centrally located near the playground. The cost to build the structure is approximately $5,000 and was raised through various fundraising efforts, including a plant sale. In addition, a number of monetary and material donations were made by local businesses including the Mendon Lions Club, Milford National Bank, Kimball Sand and Gravel, Salon Colour of Milford, Mendon Country Gift Barn, Eric Peterson Landscaping, Consigli Corporation, Koopman's Lumbar, Taylor Rental of Milford, Milford Concrete, Dunkin Donut's of Mendon, and Ideal Pizza of Upton. There were also multiple private donations from residents including one for $500. Personal donations will be recognized through a plaque on site. Jean Byrne also donated baked goods to feed hungry workers.

Venture Crew Advisor Rosemary Arduino added a special thanks to Dan Fleury and Dan Gardner for their construction services, as well as site preparation, additional construction, and surveying supplied by Dan Boucher and Project Coordinator Kathy Schofield.

And while the pavilion's exact purpose hasn't been specified, most agree it will mainly be used as a gathering place. "The idea is to use it for anything," said Fleury, an Advisor for Troop 44. "We just wanted to provide something for the area." Picnic tables might be placed on the pavilion or it could possibly be utilized by children taking part in the summer recreation program at the Park.

Once finished, an event will be planned on site to celebrate the completion of the pavilion and to thank all those involved.
