The Juvenile Advocacy Group (JAG) and the Milford Youth Center (MYC) Youth Council have awarded two mini-grants. The first project, written by two Youth Center members, Henry Morales and Giovanny Mercado, is to create a youth garden at the Milford Youth Center. They both have learned the importance of living a healthy lifestyle from attending MYC. From this garden they hope to be able to offer an alternative to unhealthy snacks by providing vegetables and fruit to other members.

The second project, written by Jonathan Delgado and Rodney Rivera along with other members of the boxing club, is to improve the MYC Boxing Club. This is a very popular program at the Youth Center and focuses on Physical fitness. The group will purchase new fitness equipment, which will be utilized to develop their own techniques as well as help train/recruit other youth.

All mini-grants, funded by Social Capital Inc. (SCI), had to be youth-initiated projects with an adult acting in a strictly advisory role. The goal behind the mini-grant program is to have young people encourage their peers to follow their example and design their own community benefitting project. SCI is a non-profit organization based out of Woburn that looks to strengthen communities by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. SCI is currently working on this mission and vision in nine Massachusetts locations, including Milford. SCI currently has an SCI AmeriCorps member serving in conjunction with JAG and MYC to build youth leadership opportunities through the efforts of the JAG Youth Council.
