One World, Many Stories, A Day at the Zoo

The Cinelli and Orff children wait with Taft Children's Librarian Andrew Jenrich at the entrance of the Southwick's Zoo.

The Taft Public Library's Summer Reading Program, "One World, Many Stories," stopped at a local summer landmark on June 30. One hundred adults and children, who signed up for the event, were given free admission to Southwick's Zoo in Mendon, paid for through Taft's programming budget.

Families were able to enjoy a fun-filled day walking through the zoo to view some of the 500 wild animals including chimpanzees, flamingos, pot bellied pigs, and zebras. They were also able to see live animal demonstrations such as a dog and horse show and an exotic bird talk. There were many smiling faces to be seen throughout the group that day, both because of the perfect weather and because of the interesting sights.

Allison Cinelli, 6 of Mendon, said, "My favorite part of the zoo was feeding the deer in the deer park." Her sister Amanda, 4, added, "My favorite part were the giraffes."

Children's Librarian Andrew Jenrich said after the event, "The feedback from the people who attended was very positive; everyone had a great time."

This is the second year that the Taft library has hosted this trip. Last year they offered 50 free admissions but because it was such a popular event with the library patrons, they decided to double the admissions for this year.

Jenrich mentioned that depending on their programming budget, they hope to offer this event again next year.
