Neverland Magic in Upton

The Upton Recreation Commission's Youth Theater presented its adaptation of Peter Pan, to a packed Town Hall auditorium on Friday, July 22, which happened to be during one of the hottest days this summer providing somewhat uncomfortable conditions for both performers and audience members but the show went on. "The kids had a blast and received a standing ovation at the end of the show, can't ask for more than that!" said Jen Davis-Nicoll who directed the play and adapted the script.

Based on the novel, The Adventures of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie with original music by Bob Nicoll, who also acted as musical director, the play was free and open to everyone with JJ's ice cream available afterward for anyone who wanted to stay and meet the actors.

"Given the extreme heat, it was at least 100 degrees in the Town Hall, I was pleased that so many people turned up for the show and stayed and no one passed out," Davis-Nicoll said. She indicated that possibly this theater program will be held at Nipmuc next summer to avoid this from happening again given the town hall isn't air-conditioned.

The sets and costumes were all detailed and quite realistic looking and Davis-Nicoll credits many of the parents for their help. Assistant Directors were Whitney Loeper and Anne Martland, who also did the choreography. Loeper also did the signing for the hearing impaired.

The cast consisted of Kaitlyn Schimp as Peter Pan, Katherine Plutnicki as Wendy, Abbey Basile played Tinkerbell while Captain Hook was played by Leah Fitzgerald. RobinSage Murphy played John and Michael was played by Julia Orff. Nicole Oliveira played Mrs. Darling with Diana Richard as Mr. Darling, and Nana, their nurse dog was Jordan Davidson. The fairy Narrators were Brynna Seligman, Maryn Shilale and Maya Simpson. The Lost Boys were Haley Alcott, as Tootles, Ellen Dixon as Nibs,

Jarrett Nicoll as Slightly, Sydney Macrae as Curly, Katelyn Corey as Twin 1 and Mackenzie LeClaire as Twin 2.

The Pirates were played by Kael McManus as Smee, Triston O'Hagan in the role of Starkey, Diana Richard as Cecco, Nicole Oliveira as Bill Jukes, Chet Simpson as Cookson, Zach Shilale as Skylights, Julie Sullivan as Alf Mason, Jordan Davidson as Mullins and Ellen Dixon in the role of Tiger Lily. Katelyn Corey, Julie Sullivan, and Jordan Davidson also played the crocodile and Julie Sullivan acted as the he Mermaid and the Neverbird as well. The opening skit was performed by Katelyn Corey, Chet Simpson and Triston O'Hagan.

"The kids worked very hard to get ready for the play," said parent, Melissa Orff, "especially in the last week when they had to practice in the intense heat!"  She added that her daughter wants to sign up for this camp again for next year right away.
