Cycling through Mendon for a Cure

Mendon residents turned out to cheer on the cyclists taking part in the 32nd Annual PMC. The athletes rode up the hills of Mendon along Hartford Avenue West and Rt. 16 before starting their downhill run through the center of town and along Providence, Bellingham and Bates Streets on their way east to Wellesley or Bourne.

Thousands of bicyclists riding to raise funds for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the 2011 Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (PMC) made their way through Mendon on Saturday, August 6. The cyclists, who raise funds through pledges, began their ride in Sturbridge as the sun peeked over the horizon and rode on to Wellesley, 72 miles, or Bourne, 111 miles. Some rode again the next day to Provincetown for a total of 192 miles. The cyclists rode on Hartford Avenue West, Rt. 16 and along Maple, Providence, Bellingham and Bates Streets in Mendon.

Among the celebrities riding this year were Chris Villani, Town Crier Reporter, Senator John Kerry and Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts and seven-time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong. Armstrong, who survived testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain, is now retired from racing and waging a campaign against the disease.
