Board of Health Discusses Trash Tonnage, Celiac Disease and Hospice Care

The amount of trash Milford residents are putting out for curbside pick-up this year is running at a lower volume than in the three previous calendar years calendar years, according to reports the Board of Health discussed this summer. The average for calendar years 2007 through 2010 is 9,197 tons per year, but the first half of this year saw only 4,186 tons – about 412 tons lower than the average – being disposed.

Recycling is following the same trend, with the average tonnage for calendar years 2008 through 2010 being roughly 1,438 tons. The first six months of this year saw only about 699 tons, nearly 20 tons below average, according to the Board of Health's reports.

Public Health Director Paul Mazzuchelli said that – based on the number of inquiries his office receives – he plans to ask local restaurants if they would consider offering gluten-free menus. An estimated one in 133 people suffers from celiac disease and cannot digest gluten, he said.

The board also met with Jean Masciarelli, director of Home Health Services for the VNA and Hospice of Greater Milford, to review the public health nursing and health promotion activities her agency provided during the past fiscal year. Five health screening/health education clinics were held at the Senior Center, and five flu immunization clinics were held at the senior center and Housing Authority facilities. Active tuberculosis cases declined from nine in fiscal year 2005 to none in the past two fiscal years, Masciarelli reported.

This year, flu shots will start to be available at the end of October or early November, and her agency hopes to have enough doses for its annual senior clinics, she said.

The VNA helps the Board of Health because "education and awareness is our first line of defense," Mazzuchelli said.
