Driscoll Elected to Finance Committee

Upton resident Robert Driscoll was unanimously elected to serve as the newest member of the Finance Committee during an August 30 joint election between the Finance Committee and the Board of Selectmen. The election was necessary after the recent resignation of member Herman Meisner, who is relocating to Maine. Driscoll will serve in the position until the May 2012 Town Election, at which time he would have to run for the seat again if he chooses to.

After hearing of the vacancy, in July, Driscoll sent a memo to Town Manager Blythe Robinson expressing his interest and stated it would be an honor to serve on the Finance Committee. "I want to serve my community," he said.

Driscoll has prior experience in town government. While residing in Peabody, he served on the town's Rent Control Board from 1979 to 1984, chairing from 1980 to 1984. During his time on the Board, he attended and chaired public hearings and determined rental levels for mobile home parks. He also served on the Peabody Licensing Board for which he oversaw the issuance and maintenance of liquor licenses and the suspension and revocation proceedings. He moved to Upton 17 years ago and is a retired municipal employee.

Prior to his election, Driscoll had attended some Finance Committee meetings. He feels the members are a fair and open minded group and is looking forward to helping with the challenges of the upcoming budget season.

Still, Driscoll isn't the only new face around. The Board also approved the recommendation of Town Manager Blythe Robinson to hire Theresa (Terry) Palmer as the new Department Coordinator for the Board of Selectmen's office. Palmer will replace Karen Varney, who worked for the town for ten years and is retiring. Varney stated she has enjoyed working for her hometown and can't believe it's been ten years. "It's gone by fast," she said.

Ironically, Palmer worked in the Board of Selectmen's office as the Administrative Assistant in Mendon for ten years. However, in July, she was laid off due to budget cuts.

In all, ten applications were received for the Department Coordinator's position. Robinson stated she was impressed with Palmer's experience, technical background, and her interest in helping residents.

During an August 23 meeting, Palmer was introduced to the Board of Selectmen. "Blythe mentioned you had a sense of humor; you're going to need it working with us," said Selectman Ken Picard. Palmer begins her new position September 12.
