Felicitaciones Clough Escuela!

Clough Elementary School wins the "School of Year" award from the Spanish Ministry of Education and is presented a $5,000 check for classroom books and materials. Accepting the check (from l to r), Superintendent Dr. Joseph Maruszczak; Spanish Immersion teachers Kharen Torres, Thais Lopez, Esther Willinski, Emilia Gamboni, and Jennifer Hall; Principal Janice Gallagher, Banco Santander Shareholders Director Susana Moraleja, and Education Advisor for the Consulate General of Spain Francisco de Asis Garcia Diez.

It was congratulations all around at Clough Elementary School, which was chosen by the Spanish Ministry of Education as the "School of the Year" for the Elementary Spanish Immersion Program. The award included the presentation of a $5,000 check on September 15 to Clough Principal Janice Gallagher.

The award is given to schools in the United States that demonstrate "excellence in language education programs." The award competition involved a comprehensive application process, a thorough review of program data, a daylong site visit and across-the-board observations of schools involved. Over 40 schools took part in the competition, and Clough was advised last spring that they had earned the top honor at the elementary level from the Spanish Ministry of Education and the $5,000 cash award.

Francisco de Asis Garcia Diez, Education Advisor for the Consulate General of Spain, said that Clough had "a wonderful program; an example to be followed," and that "a jury from Washington selected them from many worthy candidates."

The award was also sponsored by Banco Santander Shareholders, and Director Susana Moraleja was equally impressed with Clough's Spanish Immersion program. She said, "We liked their program and their commitment to the immersion process."

Third grade teacher Esther Willinski, who has been teaching in the Spanish Immersion Program at Clough for the past six years, was excited about the recognition as well as the prize. "We are going to be able to put the money to good use," she said. "We are going to be able to buy a lot of materials for our classes."

Principal Janice Gallagher congratulated her staff by saying, "I am very excited for the Clough teachers for being acknowledged for the work they do with the Spanish Immersion students. They deserve this high recognition." She also credited the district as a whole for the "award-winning" Spanish Immersion program. "We have an incredible Spanish Immersion Program at both Clough and Memorial School. Our district is very fortunate to have such a dedicated Spanish team," she said.

The Millis Public Middle School was also the First Prize winner of the "School of the Year" award for their Middle School Spanish Immersion Program.
