Mendon Upton Schools Plan Ahead for Snow

Mendon/Upton Regional School Superintendent Dr. Joseph Maruszczak presented his plan for possible 2011/2012 snow make-up days at the November 11 School Committee Meeting. Due to the fact that Tropical Storm Irene forced the cancellation of the Mendon/Upton Schools for three days on August 30 and 31 and September 1 (the first three days of the school year), the last day of school is currently scheduled for June 19.

Maruszczak surveyed the parents and staff in October to find out what their preferences would be for additional make-up days due to snow cancellations. Over 1100 parents and 170 staff members responded to the survey and the majority of those who responded did not like the idea of extending the school year into the week of June 25.

After compiling the feedback from the survey, Maruszczak presented his contingency plan to the Committee for approval. "I think it is important to put potential (make-up) dates out there publically to give parents a good fivr weeks to know it's coming," said Maruszczak. "One of the biggest pieces of feedback that I received was; just let us know up front, and not to wait until the last minute."

Maruszczak said that traditionally, with the exception of last year, the District has had only zero to three snow days per year. If this year follows that trend, the make-up days will be at the end of the school year on June 20, 21 and 22. If there are four or more snow days, additional make-up days will be added into the schedule. Maruszczak says that although unlikely, his plan covers for up to seven snow days without having to make up days after June 22, depending on when the snow days fall.

He also said the plan takes into account the preferences of the parents and staff as per the survey results. "The make-up days are listed in order of the parent and teacher survey responses; what was most palatable for a make-up day," he said.

A chart of the make-up plan which was approved by the School Committee can be seen below. The make-up days would be in the order as listed for each possibility. Maruszczak said that if there are any questions about the contingency plan, parents may call the Central Office or their building Principals.
