Mendon Officials to Discuss Self Serve Gas Stations

Over the upcoming weeks, the Mendon Board of Selectmen will decide whether or not to put a question on an upcoming town meeting warrant that would allow gas stations in town to be self-serve. The brief discussion came during a January 17 Board of Selectmen's meeting.

Currently, Mendon's bylaws only allow gas stations in town to provide full service gas pumps.

At present, Mendon has one gas station in town, Imperial Gas, located on Route 16. However, there is currently a proposal moving forward to construct a new convenience store that would also contain a five-pump gas station on lots 147, 149, and 163 on Hartford Ave. East.

Should the Board decide to go forward with the self-serve gas bylaw change, the town's Planning Board will also be involved.

"This has been coming for a long time," said Planning Board Chair Bill Ambrosino of the changeover, who feels most customers and gas station owners prefer self-serve stations anyway.

"It will be a savings for owners because they won't have to hire as many people to pump the gas," he said. However, Ambrosino added that if the bylaw changes, gas stations in town would be asked to have one full service pump for those customers who need assistance.

Such a change would require a majority vote by residents at a town meeting. According to Board of Selectmen Chair Michael Goddard, public hearings will be scheduled to hear the concerns of any residents on the self-service pumps.

In other Planning Board news, members are currently working on updates to the town's Website. Last year, the Planning Board was responsible for a complete overhaul of Mendon's Web site, which took more than a year to complete. The new website is more interactive, provides email alerts to residents, and is more user-friendly. It was launched last June.

The Planning Board continues to oversee the website and is presently working on even more updates to it that will include the addition of assessor maps and uploading files that will allow residents to print or edit them right online. "We're trying to dress it up," said Ambrosino. The Planning Board plans to discuss the latest additions to the Website with the Board of Selectmen at a future meeting.
