“Most Dangerous Intersection” to Get a Traffic Light

The intersection of Prospect St. (Rt. 140) and Water St., termed Milford's most dangerous intersection, will soon be regulated by a traffic light.

Soon there will be a traffic light at what Police Chief Thomas O'Loughlin has called the town's "most dangerous intersection" – Prospect St. (Route 140) and Water St.

Town Administrator Louis Celozzi briefed the Board of Selectmen on February 13 about a meeting the previous week held by Town Engineer Michael Santora with State Sen. Richard Moore, D. Uxbridge, State Rep. John Fernandes, D. Milford, Highway Surveyor Scott Crisafulli and engineers from the state Department of Transportation's (MassDOT) local district office. "It was agreed by all that with the high traffic volumes and accident history at this intersection, signalization is warranted," Santora wrote to Celozzi.

However, MassDOT traffic engineers felt the normal Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) process to gain funding for the light would take about five years. Because that was too long, the DOT committed to do the project from the district's maintenance budget in the Fall of 2012 or Spring of 2013, Santora said.

While the DOT would pay between $150,000 to $200,000 of the total project costs, it needed the town to pay for other costs, Celozzi said. Crisafulli has committed to building the handicapped access ramps for the project and the town may have to pay for easements at the intersection, the town administrator said.

"That's a tough intersection," Selectman Brian Murray said. "I think this'll be a well-needed project." Selectman William Buckley said the money for easement-takings should be appropriated at the May 21 Annual Town Meeting. "We may be able to get it in," Celozzi said.
