Crime Rate a Campaign Issue

The statistics for crimes in Milford became a political football last month when Michael Denice, a candidate for the Board of Selectmen, labeled "crime" as one of the biggest issues facing the town. The Police Department's statistics – comparing 2011 to 2010 – for 29 categories of crimes as counted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) show seven categories increased, 21 categories decreased, and one remaining the same.

The seven categories that increased were: kidnapping/abduction (three to six); simple assaults (105 to 195); false pretense/swindle/con (46 to 72); stolen property offenses (31 to 37); statutory rape (13 to 15); pornography/obscene materials (one to two); and, bad checks (11 to 17).

Police Chief Thomas O'Loughlin released data showing the amount of crimes over the past eight years within the FBI categories. Although O'Loughlin prefers comparing one given year against the previous year as providing fair comparisons, he also distributed an eight-year average. He also released the department's motor vehicle citation statistics for the same 2004 to 2011 period. Comparing 2011 to 2010, unlicensed operation increased from 158 to 162, while operating under the influence (OUI), operating after revocation, and operating after suspension all declined.

The average number for crimes in each category for each year during the eight year period of 2004-11 are: murder/homicide: 0.75; kidnapping/abduction: 2.375; rape: 17.875; robbery: 12; aggravated assault: 71.75; arson: 4.0; burglary/breaking and entering: 87.375; larceny: 374.125; motor vehicle theft: 28; simple assault: 131.875; intimidation: 78.875; counterfeiting/forgery: 30; false pretenses/swindle/con: 59.5; credit card/automatic teller: 14; impersonation: 22.875; embezzlement: 5.5; stolen property offenses: 19.0; destruction/damage/vandalism: 221.75; drug/narcotic violations: 69.875; drug equipment violations: 5.625; statutory rape: 20.75; pornography/obscene materials: 2.5; prostitution: 1.125; weapon law violations: 14.75; bad checks: 21.625; disorderly conduct: 77.625; driving under the influence: 31.125; drunkenness: 46.5; non-violent family offenses: 8.75; liquor law violations: 25.125; and, trespass of real property: 8.125.

The 2004-2011 averages for motor vehicle violations are: OUI: 31.125; operating after revocation: 8.25; operating after suspension: 30.875; and, unlicensed operation: 158.375.
