Mendon Voters Back Romney

It appears voters in Mendon are backing Mitt Romney as the next Republican Presidential Candidate. The former governor easily won in Mendon during the March 6 Super Tuesday Presidential Primary. Romney also won in Vermont, Ohio, Alaska, Idaho, and Alaska on Super Tuesday. In addition to voting for their favorite presidential candidate, residents also voted for State Committee Man, State Committee Woman, and for members of the Democratic or Republican Town Committee.

The Republican Presidential candidates received the following votes in Mendon: Mitt Romney, 332; Rick Santorum, 56; Ron Paul, 33; Newt Gingrich, 30; Jon Huntsman, 4; and Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann each received one vote. In addition, there was also one write in and one no preference vote. On the Democratic ballot, Barack Obama received 48 votes. There were also two write-ins and eight no preference votes. The Green Rainbow Party received no votes.

Running for the Republican State Committee Man was only one candidate, Michael Potaski, who received 277 votes; there were also two write ins and 180 blank ballots. Republican Kimberly Roy, the only candidate for State Committee Woman, received 282 votes, with 177 blank ballots. Lone Democratic candidate for State Committee Man, Thomas Cullen, received 50 votes with eight blank ballots, and Lisa Mosczynski, the only Democratic candidate for State Committee Woman, received 49 votes with nine blank ballots. There were no candidates running from the Green Rainbow Party for State Committee Man or State Committee Woman.

For the Republican Town Committee there were no formal candidates running. However, residents David Lowell, Rolland Morin, Richard Grady, John Grady, Roger Marquis, Peter Hawkes, Dale Pleau, John Colombo, Judy Leonelli, Kevin Rudden, Sean Rogan and Patrick Klupa all received one write in vote each and 2,741 ballots were left blank. Nevertheless, according to Town Clerk Margaret Bonderenko, each candidate needs at least five votes to sit on the Town Committee. For the Democratic Town Committee, Carolyn Barthel received 40 votes, Rand Barthel received 39 votes, and Peggy Veal received 44 votes. There were also two write-ins and 455 blank ballots. There were no candidates running from the Green Rainbow Party for the Republican or Democratic Town Committee.

Out of 4,157 registered voters in Mendon, 517 votes were cast during Super Tuesday. The Town Clerk reminds anyone wishing to register to vote in the local Town Election scheduled for May 15 must do so by April 13.
