Last Minute Candidates; Two Races Mendon

Mendon's Town Election ballot changed in a matter of days according to Town Clerk Margaret Bonderenko. Final nomination papers were due on Tuesday, March 27. The week prior, seats for the Board of Health and the Mendon Upton Regional School Committee remained without candidates. However, just days later, four newcomers turned in their completed nomination papers, resulting in two races. The Town Election is scheduled for May 15. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Miscoe Hill School.

Residents Leigh Martin and Kevin Rudden, a former Mendon selectman and Planning Board member but new to the School Committee, are both vying for the three year seat on the Mendon Upton Regional School Committee. The incumbent, Don Morin, decided not to seek another term. The second race involves Thomas Fichtner and Keith Usher who are running against each other for the Board of Health's three year seat. The incumbent was John Quirk.

Nearly all the remaining seats up for re-election are being sought by incumbents and are unchallenged. They include Michael Goddard for the Board of Selectmen for three years; Jay Byer for Moderator for one year; Margaret Bonderenko for the Town Clerk for three years; Thomas Hackenson for Assessor for three years; Joseph Flaherty for Parks Commissioner for three years; Robert Carlson for Taft Public Library Trustee for three years; William McHenry for Taft Public Library Trustee for two years; Peter Denton for Mendon Housing Authority for five years; and Damon Tinio for Planning Board for five years.

The only position without a candidate is for the Water Commissioner's three year seat. The incumbent, Robert Gilchrist, recently announced he would not be seeking another term.

The last day for a candidate to withdraw from the election is April 14. All candidates may begin displaying signs on April 17 with the understanding they must be taken down by May 22.

The last day to register to vote in the May 15 Annual Town Election and May 4 Annual Town Meeting is Friday, April 13. The Town Clerk's office will be open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on that day. Any residents who have questions concerning voter registration should be directed to the Town Clerk's office at 508 473-1085 or email
