Do You “Think You Can” Walk Around Milford?

Why is an imprint of a train engine coming to some Milford sidewalks? It is highlighting the town's cultural history, of course.

Highway Surveyor Scott Crisafulli has enlisted the help of P.A. Landers, Inc. – the construction company working on the downtown traffic signal replacement project – to "stamp" a dozen 18-inch by 18-inch images about a half-inch deep into the sidewalks to mark The Little Engine That Could historic walk. Mabel Bragg, author of the famous children's book, is from Milford.

The walk is one of several identified in a new map of walking routes in Milford prepared by the non-profit walkBoston group (www.walkboston,org), the MetroWest Health Foundation and the Healthy Futures program. Places to look for identified on the routes include Louisa Lake, the Clark's Island Bicentennial Park, the Upper Charles Trail, the Irish Round Tower, Memorial Hall and Draper Park. The routes mapped out are:

• The Little Engine That Could Historic Walk (1.5 miles)

• Two Miles Before Breakfast (2.0 miles)

• High School Promenade (0.5 mile)

• High School Heights (3.0 miles)

• Loops Below Main (1.25 miles)

• Medical Center to Downtown (0.75 mile)

• Hospital Rounds (1.5 miles)

• Upper Charles Trail (1.0 mile)

• Upper Charles Connector (1.0 mile)

• Parks, Paths and Stones (0.75 mile)

If you "think you can" complete The Little Engine That Could walk, start at Congress St. and Spruce St., head south on Congress St., left onto Main St., left onto Winter St., left onto Granite St., left onto Pearl St., right onto Main St. and right onto Spruce St. Until the stampings are made, the sidewalk locations are designated by white "LT" markings, Crisafulli explained.
