New Rhode Island Park Features Schematic by Mendon Graphic Artist

There is new overlook/park on the Blackstone River in Central Falls, R.I. Located at the corner of Charles St. and Roosevelt Ave., the Chocolateville overlook provides access to the river, and includes a bike rack, veteran's memorial stone, seating bench, cherry trees (from the mayor of Tokyo, Japan), and interpretive signage. During the late 1700s and early 1800s the site featured a chocolate mill built by William Wheat, a local innkeeper, trader and chocolateer. His cocoa mix made it' way onto whaling ships, navy vessels, and the army. The mill was damaged during a flood in 1897 and was all but gone by 1934.

A placard about a river monitoring gauge at that location features artwork drawn by local scientific visualization specialist Mark V. Bonito of Mendon, who processes images for the USGS. The schematic shows how gauge 01113895 works.

The U.S. Geological Survey maintains records of natural resources and operates more than 7,400 streamgages nationwide. Ninety percent, including this station, transmit information electronically so that streamflow information is available on the World Wide Web in real time at http://waterdata.usgs.gov. The information is used in a variety of ways including: flood prediction; design and operation of dams and other structures; scientific research; drought forecasting; recreational safety; and water resources management and allocation.

The new overlook/park was paid for almost entirely by donations, which included a large matching grant from Mars chocolate company. For more information, link to www.chocolatemilloverlook.com.
