Annual Milford Firefighters Memorial Ceremony

At the Firefighters Memorial ceremony, Firefighter Patrick Evans rang a bell each time the name of a deceased firefighter was read aloud.

Milford's firefighters, family members and guests gathered at the Birch Street Fire Headquarters on June 3 to remember firefighters who served the town. "It is a special calling," noted State Senator Richard Moore, D. Uxbridge.

"The fire service has a very long and proud tradition in this country" that dates back to colonial times, Moore explained. "The firefighter is the chief line of civil defense," the first on scene "to protect the safety of the general public," said Selectmen Chairman Brian Murray. Since September 11, 2001, the image of what a firefighter is and the duties a firefighter performs have changed, and "where there are greater responsibilities, there are greater risks," he said.

Firefighting continues to be a dangerous profession, said Fire Chief John Touhey. "They report to work each shift knowing that the work they perform can be dangerous," he said, calling the position of firefighter "a very physically demanding job."
