Mendon Treasurer/Collector Job is a Good Fit

Working for a municipality may be a new venture for Mendon's new Town Treasurer/Collector John Morte, however, ask him and he'll tell people it's something he's been working toward for some time.

In April, the Board of Selectmen voted 2 to 1 to appoint Morte after several rounds of interviews with various candidates. Former Treasurer/Collector Christine Kupstas retired after working in the position for nearly 10 years.

Throughout his professional career, Morte has taken several different paths, first working in banking in Milford as a Branch Administrator then as a Business Development Officer. From there, his interests turned to real estate where he worked as a Broker Associate for Century 21 and Prudential Premium Properties, both located in Milford. He says he continues to dabble in real estate when time permits.

Although he's new to working for a municipality, he grew up with an understanding of it as both his parents worked for the Town of Milford, where Morte was "born and breed" and continues to reside. "My mom was an Assistant Clerk for the Highway Surveyor and my father also worked for the Highway Department," he said.

He said he always thought about someday following in their footsteps by working for Milford or another community. As a result in 2010 and 2011 he attended years one and two of a three year program at the Annual School for Massachusetts Collectors and Treasurers Association. It was on the school's website that he saw the posting for the Treasurer/Collector's position in Mendon and applied for the position. He also has his BA Degree in Sociology from College of Holy Cross and attended both Babson College and Williams College's School of Banking Programs.

While it seems that his jobs have taken him in different directions, Morte says one thing they all have in common is serving people, and that the residents of Mendon have made that part of his job easy for him. "They've been very welcoming," he said. "I'm surprised at the number of people I already know who live or work in town."

Morte's official start date was April 12. Since that time, he's already issued one tax bill and is currently preparing for another. "It's a learning curve," he said of his work. With the possible library debt exclusion passing, his work days will be even busier than ever. He's also working hard to collect monies owed to Mendon, "so we can continue to function as a town...But I'm doing it nicely."

The Treasurer/Collector's office is open Monday through Thursday and is located at the Town Hall. Morte can be contacted at 508-473-6410 or
