Ken Picard Appointed Multi-Board Chairperson

Members of the Mendon and Upton Boards of Selectmen, Finance Committees and School Committee met on August 30 to discuss the organizational structure and the mission and goals of this Multi-Board. Fourteen members attended the "kick-off" meeting to discuss the merits of becoming more structured by appointing a Chairperson and creating a mission statement for the Multi-Board group. "We should have a Chair so that we stay on task," said Upton Board of Selectman Chairman Ken Picard. Mendon Selectmen Chairman Mike Ammendolia expressed concerns about defining roles among the group. He mentioned the success the group had the previous year. "Things worked well the way they were, why change it?" he said. After a short discussion of the scope of the Chairperson role, Picard was recommended and appointed the Multi-Board Chair for 2012-2013.

The group recapped the goals and objectives from the previous year, both as a whole and as individual task forces. Increased communication, both between the three groups and with the public was a major goal that the Board feels they have made good headway. "This committee has opened more collaboration and more dialog," said Picard. School Committee Chairperson Kathleen Drennan stated that another major accomplishment for the Board was the connections that they group made with Framingham State College in order to provide enhanced learning opportunities for high school students and professional development opportunities for our teachers in the future.

All parties agreed there was still a lot to do. "I feel like there is a lot of unfinished business," said Mendon Selectman Mike Goddard. "Not because it is unfinished, but because there is more we can do."

The group discussed the importance of developing a mission statement and both Goddard and Drennan volunteered to work on putting a statement in writing and presenting it to the group at the next meeting. The group also determined that it would be beneficial to have the Finance Committee's for both Mendon and Upton work together to share budgeting processes, fiscal calendars, and best practices, hoping it is a good first step in the new year. "Small steps is how we succeed," said Picard.

Topics for the next Multi-Board meeting will include a broad discussion of revenue projections for both towns, the presentation of the first pass of the mission statement, and a "budget orientation" from both Finance Committees. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 27 in the Professional Development Center at Nipmuc Regional High School.
