Ensuring a Great Bedtime for 145 Youngsters

Miscoe Hill School 5th Grade Teachers Dan Rogers and Lauren Lajoie with their students organized their 2nd annual Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive benefitting the Pajama Program, a nonprofit organization that provides new pajamas to children in need. Students collected 145 set of pajamas this year, which will be donated to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

In the season of giving, Miscoe Hill students gave their all in collecting donations of new pajamas for those in need. For the second year in a row, 5th grade teachers Dan Rogers and Lauren Lajoie organized Miscoe's participation in Scholastic Book Clubs' Annual Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive benefitting the Pajama Program, a nonprofit organization that provides new pajamas and books to children in need; especially those living in group homes, shelters, foster care, and orphanages. Scholastic Book Club will also match a book donation to Pajama Program for each pair of donated pajamas they receive.

From November 26 through December 14, donations were solicited for brand new pajama sets for children, teens, and adults. Last year, Miscoe collected over 85 sets of pajamas which were donated to an organization in Worcester assigned to them through the Pajama Program. This year 145 pairs of new pajamas were collected by the Miscoe students, an "amazing" feat according to Rogers. "I was overwhelmed by the response," he said. All of this year's donations will be given to a chapter of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children located in Worcester County.

Rogers said that there is an important reason why they started this drive last year. "We do this drive because we want the students to understand that we have a responsibility as citizens of this world to take care of each other," he said. "We want them to see that not everyone has the things that they have that sometimes can be taken for granted."

Rogers said that he hopes they are able to do this fundraiser again next year. "It is a worthwhile cause," he said.

Miscoe Principal Ann Meyer said that she was impressed with the dedication the students showed to this project. "The students were intent on raising the number for PJ's collected from the previous year so more children had access to new books and pajamas. Mr. Rogers and Mrs. Lajoie did a wonderful job helping the students organize the drive and to inspire the Miscoe population to give to this cause," said Meyer.
