Mendon Town Election Season Begins

There may be snow on the ground, but it won't be long before Mendon's annual spring election is here. On Tuesday, May 14, registered voters will head to the polls to vote in various town officials. In total, 13 offices are up for re-election. The current office holders and length of the terms include: Moderator for one year, Jay R. Byer; Selectman for three years, Michael Ammendolia; Board of Health for three years, Andrew J. Fiske; Assessor for three years, Kenneth M. O'Brien; Park Commissioner for three years, Susan G. Barnett; Water Commissioner for three years, Dwight L. Watson; two Taft Public Library Trustees for three years, Amy M. Fahey and Katherine W. Carlson; Taft Public Library Trustee for one year, Daniel E. Gilmore, Jr.; Mendon Upton Regional School District Committee member for three years, Kathleen M. Drennan; Planning Board for five years, James Quirk; Housing Authority for five years, Mary F. Garagliano; and Tree Warden for three years, Howard F. Phipps.

Interested candidates may pick up nomination papers in the Town Clerk's office beginning Tuesday, February 19. All completed nomination papers must be returned to the Town Clerk by 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 26.

Candidates need 25 signatures from registered Mendon voters. Any resident signing nomination papers must sign in person as registered, or substantially as registered, and shall state the address where he or she is currently living with street and number included; no P.O. boxes allowed. Registered voters may sign more than one nomination paper for the same office. The last day for a candidate to withdraw from the election is Thursday, April 11.

Residents who have not already registered to vote may do so in the Town Clerk's office during regular office hours, in any town clerk's office in Massachusetts, at the Registry of Motor Vehicles, at certain state agencies, or by using the mail-in registration form. The mail-in form is available at the Mendon Post Office, the Taft Public Library, and at any town or city hall in Massachusetts.

The last day to register to vote in the May 14 Annual Town Election and Friday, May 3 Annual Town Meeting is Friday, April 12. The Town Clerk's office will be open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on that day to register voters.

The Town Clerk's regular business hours are Monday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office is closed on Friday.
