Helping the Mendon Senior Center

A variety of activities are now going on to help support the Mendon Senior Center.

Mark your calendars for April 5 and 6 when the Friends of Mendon Elders will be holding their Fifth Annual Book Sale at the Mendon Senior Center located at 62 Providence Road. The Friday date will run from 3 p.m. to 7, and Saturday's hours are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This popular event aims to be the biggest yet. Volunteers have been busy sorting books; all unbelievably priced at no more than one dollar each. In addition to the many books, puzzles, CDs, DVDs, games, previously viewed videos will be available for sale as well. Assorted donations are arriving daily just waiting to be scooped up by savvy bargain hunters. Contributions of books, games, and related items are welcome and can be dropped off at the Senior Center weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or call 508-478-6175 and leave a message at the Senior Center to make other arrangements.

The Friends are also collecting used cell phones for an ongoing fund raiser. The seniors receive cash back for every cell phone collected. Every phone, no matter the condition or age, can be refurbished or smelted in order to keep valuable cellular equipment out of our community's landfills. Collection boxes for the used cell phones are at the Senior Center.

The Senior Center is also collecting five cent returnable bottles and cans for redemption. The resulting funds are used to purchase gasoline for the senior van. This has kept the cost of ridership minimal as every nickel earned supports the new van. Donations can be dropped off anytime at the Center and placed in the gazebo.

There are many volunteer opportunities at the Senior Center, whether it is counting cans, sorting books, helping with the Tuesday or Thursday luncheons and more, your help is always welcome. Please stop by or contact Senior Center Director Amy Wilson Kent at the number above.
