Write-Ins will Decide Two Seats in Upton

It looks like two write in campaigns in Upton will decide who will sit on the Mendon Upton Regional School Committee and on the Recreation Commission. Nomination papers for the April 30 Town Election were due on March 12 and according to Town Clerk Kelly McElreath, both seats have no candidates formally running.

Heather Applegate is the incumbent for the School Committee and Paul Pirozzi is the incumbent for the Recreation Commission; both have chosen not to seek re-election for the three year term positions.

As a result, after the election is over, the top vote getters written in for the School Committee and Recreation Commission seats will be offered the positions; they may choose to accept or decline. If the individual chooses to decline, then other write in candidates may be contacted.

All other open seats up for re-election have candidates and are uncontested. They include incumbents Ken Picard for the three-year seat for Board of Selectmen, Kelly McElreath for Town Clerk for three years, David Loeper for Town Moderator for one year, Glenn Fowler for Assessor of Taxes for three years, Robert Richard for Cemetery Commissioner for three years, Judith Katz for Library Trustee for three years, Kathleen Kelly for Library Trustee for three years, Linda Jones for Housing Authority for five years, Barbara Burke for Constable for three years, Linda White for Library Trustee for three years, Gary Bohan for Planning Board for five years, Jonathan Graves for Finance Committee for three years, James Comfort for Constable for three years, and Frances Gustman for the one year Library Trustee seat.

Several newcomers are running for offices and include Richard Robinson for the Board of Health's three year term, Michael Oliver for Commissioner of Trust Funds for three years, and Steven Driver, James Bates Jr., and Sandy Hakala for Constable for three years.

The April 30 Town Election will coincide with the state's Senate Primary. The last day for residents to register to vote in the Town Election or the State Primary is Wednesday, April 10. The Town Clerk's office will have extended hours that day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. For any questions on voter status, contact the Town Clerk's office at 508-529-3565 or mail kmcelreath@uptonma.gov. Town Clerk office hours are Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8. The office is closed on Friday.
