Mendon Special Town Meeting Scheduled for June 27

A 16-article warrant has been finalized and signed by the Mendon Board of Selectmen. The Special Town Meeting is scheduled to take place on June 27 at Miscoe Hill School at 7 p.m. While many articles concern "housekeeping" transfers, other articles include education for mosquito control and the snow and ice deficit.

The Finance Committee continues to finalize the amounts on the warrant and planned to meet on June 19 to do so. However, as of June 10, the unofficial amounts were reported as follows:

Article 1 kicks-off the meeting seeking $562 for an educational flyer concerning mosquito control. The flier is expected to be part of an insert in the Town Crier and available at the Taft Library, the Town Hall, and the town's Web site.

Articles 11, 12 and 13 concern the town's snow and ice deficit, which totals more than more than $72,000. During the June 27 meeting, Articles 12 will request approximately $43,000 from various accounts to remedy a portion of the shortfall. With a 2/3 majority vote, Article 13 may taken the remaining deficit amount out of stabilization. In addition, Article 11 is requesting $3,915 from free cash toward snow and ice removal salaries.

Two requests for Community Preservation Act funding are also included on the warrant.

Article 15 is asking for $7,500 from CPA funding to finance the excavation that was completed for the new playground at Memorial Park. And Article 16 is requesting $2,500 from CPA funding in order to make various repairs to the Records Room building located at 13 Main St.

Other articles on the warrant include Article 2 which is asking for $355 free cash to fund the insurance on the new street sweeper. However, the Finance Committee will likely be requesting to pass Article 2 over as it was discovered the funding can be covered through a credit owed to the town.

Article 3 is a $10,500 request from free cash for employees' health insurance. The increase is due to some employees making modification to their insurance plan, such as changing from a single plan to a family plan.

Article 4 concerns an upgrade to the town's server which runs Mendon's financial software. According to town officials, the server is in need of an upgrade and replacement. Article 4 is requesting $3,853 from free cash; $380 of that amount will also pay an invoice from Worldband.

Article 5 concerns the elections and registration expenses and is requesting $500 from free cash to go toward police coverage and programming for the Accuvote machine. And because the Finance Committee's expense budget was set too low, Article 6 is requesting $181 from Finance Committee salaries.

Article 7 concerns Police Department expenses and is requesting $5,500 from free cash. And Article 8 is requesting $950 from free cash for Board of Selectmen's expenses that include office supplies, printing expenses, postage, and license hearings.

Article 9 is requesting $2,230 from free cash for various Town Hall expenses including alarm and elevator services, pest control, and to clean and test smoke detectors.

Article 10 is to pay various bills for the Town Treasurer/Collector's expenses, including office supplies, postage, and advertising for a position. Article 10 is requesting $500 from free cash.

And Article 14 is requesting $20,100 for Town Counsel expenses to cover a number of legal issues for which Town Counsel services were needed.

The Special Town Meeting will take place at Miscoe Hill School and begin at 7 p.m.
