New Milford High School Guidance Director is introduced

The new Milford High School Guidance Director Matthew Baione outlined his goals of improving department responsiveness and accessibility when he was formally introduced to the Milford School Committee during a September 12 meeting.

Baione, who has a Bachelor's Degree in Social and Rehabilitation Services from Assumption College and a Master's Degree from Cambridge College, stated that he has spent the past 10 years as a Guidance Counselor at Lawrence High School. In Lawrence, Baione said he was responsible for student scheduling, supervising the Advanced Placement program, coordinating MCAS testing, counseling students dealing with student crises, and working closely with the Administration team.

Baione said that working in Lawrence was "a great experience," but because there was no Guidance Director, he assumed many of those responsibilities over the past six years. "There I got to know what it was like to be a guidance counselor, but also what it was like to be a guidance director, even though I didn't have that title," he said.

Baione said that since starting with the district this summer he has been focusing on what his goals are for the guidance department, with responsiveness and accessibility at the forefront. "I want to make sure myself and the guidance department staff are responsive... to the public, students, parents, and to the Milford Community," he said. Baione said that one objective is for the department to respond to calls within 24 hours which he stated was an issue in the past.

Baione told the School Committee that another one of his goals is to support the students and school staff as they start the new high school schedule and as they move to work on new initiatives such as developing the new hospitality management program.

After his presentation, School Committee Member Christine Boyle asked Baione how he plans to assist students in their college application process, ensuring that they apply for colleges that are pertinent for them. "One of the things I hear a lot about how kids are guided to colleges they choose. You tend to hear that kids are applying to the same schools," she said. Baione responded that it was important that the guidance counselors are educated and informed about the different colleges and their application processes. Baione told Boyle that he hopes that the counselors will be able to visit some of the colleges and see the new programs that they are offering.

School Committee Chairperson Robert Lanzetta asked Baione if there was a master timeline for milestones leading up to the college application process. Baione responded that there were many online resources and that he would work on putting the information on the guidance department section of the Milford School's website.
