Foxwoods Requests December 9 Special Town Meeting for Zoning Change

Crossroads Massachusetts, LLC has requested that December 9 be the date for a Special Town Meeting to consider a Zoning By-Law amendment to allow its proposed Foxwoods resort casino to be located in town. Selectmen received the request at their September 23 meeting, and were due to act upon it this past Monday. Already, the Planning Board has set November 21 – two days after the townwide referendum on the proposed casino host community agreement – to hold the required public hearing on that zoning amendment request.

"This board was anticipating this," commented Chairman William Buckley. Attorney Warren Heller, who submitted the request, confirmed Buckley's questions that the proposed zoning amendment would allow the proposed casino in the business park-zoned district and regulate its height. Heller also asked for the Board of Selectmen to jointly sponsor the article as required by the host community agreement.

In other business, the board unanimously transferred a common victualler license held by Licos Restaurant Pizzeria, Inc. (Eva's Pizzeria) at 55 Water St. to Marina Rocha doing business as Brunelle's Restaurant & Pizzaria, subjected to the payment of $61.55 in personal property taxes owed by the previous owner. Selectmen also issued a new common victualler license to Eric Marsland, doing business as Gourmet Pizza and Grill of Milford at 196 East Main St., subject to the payment of $149.31 in outstanding personal property taxes.

The board unanimously granted a Class II used car dealer license for one vehicle to Hillview Equipment and Leasing, Inc. at 11 Commercial Way. Attorney Ernest Pettinari said the license would allow the business to participate in online auctions.

Town Administrator Richard Villani said the Technology Task Force had hired local firm Worldband Communications to conduct an information technology assessment and report back with the next 30 to 45 days. Selectmen adopted his recommendation by voting unanimously to award the contract to replace the Town Hall roof to low bidder Bay State Contracting Company LLC of North Pembroke. The company bid $98,800, while three other companies submitted identical bids of $118,000.The work should begin in October and be finished before winter, Villani said.

Selectmen also made their annual appointments of school crossing guards: Michelle Abbitonozzi, Suzanne Banderet, Dawn Carbary, Peggy Farrell, Anthony Iacovelli, Susan Kozlowski, Gloria Linnell, Larry Lowther, Sharon Maclean, Ann Mussulli-Roccanti, Francis O'Neil, Donna Pickell-Mason, John Sherillo and Joseph Sherillo. Substitutes appointed are: Christine Alger, Richard Brogioli, Karin Campbell, Donna Lane and Marianne Wood.
