Mendon Selectmen Sign Contract with Hiring Firm

The Board of Selectmen unanimously agreed to sign a contract with Municipal Resources, Inc (MRI); a New Hampshire based firm which will assist town officials in hiring a new Town Administrator. Municipal Resources Vice President Alan Gould attended an October 21 meeting to provide an overview of his firm's hiring process.

According to Gould, to begin the process his firm's first meeting will involve a discussion with the Board in order to determine the town's strengths and deficiencies and what the Board sees as immediate needs and long-range goals.

"Based on that, MRI will put out an ideal candidate profile," said Gould. MRI will then draft an advertisement for the position which Gould said will likely draw approximately 65 to 85 potential candidates. Those candidates will be cut to approximately 20 individuals, with those remaining sent five essay questions to be answered and then evaluated by MRI staff. During this time, preliminary background checks will be also completed. Based on the remaining candidates' essays, another cut will be made.

Eventually, the top four to six candidates will be invited to an on-site interview. Panels made up of residents, municipal employees, and MRI may take part in the interview process if the Board desires this.

Selectman Lawney Tinio questioned whether or not the extra panels were necessary as they would be an added fee. Gould explained that the majority of the time, municipal and citizen panels agree with the company's top candidate choices. "I'm alright with one panel," agreed Selectman Mark Reil.

Eventually, Municipal Resources will recommend its top three candidates to be interviewed by the Board of Selectmen during an open meeting. In addition, full background checks will also take place on the top three contenders. Gould said he expects the entire process to take 90 to 120 days.

The cost to hire MRI will be approximately $11,000. An article on the November 19 Special Town Meeting Warrant is being brought forward to fund the cost. An additional $1,000 will also be part of that article to fund the costs of advertising for the position.

Mendon has been without a Town Coordinator since Dale Pleau was laid off in 2011 due to financial cut backs. Over the last year, the Board of Selectmen has stated hiring a Town Coordinator or Town Administrator is a priority.
