Planners Favorable on Fortune Blvd. Medical Marijuana Center

By a 2-1 vote, the Planning Board decided to give the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) a favorable recommendation on a request by Baystate Alternative Health Care, Inc. of Needham to open a medical marijuana cultivation center and dispensary at 425 Fortune Boulevard.

The ZBA – scheduled to hear the request on November 14 – already has granted a special permit to Bay State Relief, Inc. of Framingham to operate a similar facility at 13 Commercial Way. Ultimately, the state Department of Public Health will decide which non-profit companies will open such cultivation and treatment facilities throughout the state.

Only three Planning Board members were eligible to vote on the issue at the November 5 meeting: Chairman Joseph Calagione was absent and Patrick Kennelly recused himself due to a conflict of interest. Vice Chairman Marble Mainini and Lena McCarthy voted to give the favorable recommendation. John Cook's motion to give an unfavorable recommendation received no second, and he then voted against his two colleagues. "Personally, I don't care for it being on the second floor of a building being used for something else," Cook said. He, Mainini and McCarthy did vote together that night to waive the site plan requirements for Bay State Relief's proposed facility.

In other business, the four board members present voted unanimously to:

• Waive the site plan requirements for Yukon Nine, LLC's petroleum storage facility at 51 Depot Street;

• Waive the site plan requirements for the new Scott Braga Barber Shop at 283 Main Street (Route 16) at the corner of Taylor Street;

• Send a favorable recommendation to the ZBA on Milford Nissan Corporation's special permit request to use property at 148-150 East Main Street (Route 16) between Hamilton Street and Free Street as an overflow display lot;

• Send a favorable recommendation to the ZBA on TGI Friday's special permit request to erect a "trailblazer" directional sign north of the gasoline station entrance at 134 on Cedar Street (Route 85);

• Send a favorable recommendation to the ZBA on Green Street Auto Spa, Inc.'s special permit request to operate a car wash at 39 Green Street at the corner of Cape Road (Route 140);

• Send a favorable recommendation to the ZBA on Cornerstone at Milford Assisted Living, LLC's variance request to erect a 36-square foot sign at 11 Birch Street near its intersection with Medway Road (Route 109); and,

• Send a favorable recommendation to the ZBA on the Milford School Department's variance request to build a new 132,000-square foot, three-story Woodlawn Elementary School building at 10 North Vine Street.
