Mendon Voters will be Asked to Fund Deployed Police Officer’s Salary and Public Safety Overtime

Several financial articles on the Special Town Meeting warrant involve the Public Safety Department with one article requesting funding to pay the salary of a Police Officer who returned from deployment overseas. The Special Town Meeting is scheduled for February 24 and will begin at 7 p.m. at Miscoe Hill School. In total, there are 19 articles on the warrant.

As of February 14, the Finance Committee had not yet met to agree on the recommended amounts of the money articles. As a result, some figures mentioned below may be subject to change. However, according to Finance Committee Chair Rich Schofield, funding for the articles will come from free cash, the Finance Committee Reserve account, and a surplus in health insurance.

Article 5 on the warrant is requesting $25,000 to help fund a police officer's salary. The officer, Stephen Sinko, was deployed overseas as part of his participation in the National Guard. He is returning earlier than expected and by law the town must restore him to his previous post upon his return.

Article 6 is also related to the Police Department. Because the Department has been short staffed and due to a number of injured officers, there has been an increase in overtime. Article 6 is requesting $25,000 for Police Department Overtime Wages account. And Article 7 represents the Quinn Bill portion of the wages due to Sinko's return from military service and is seeking $2,400.

Articles 8 and 9 concern the Fire Department. Article 8 is requesting $15,000 for Fire Department Overtime Wages. This is necessary because the Department's overtime has exceeded what was originally expected due to injuries. And Article 9 is requesting $20,000 for Fire Department Expenses for vehicle maintenance.

The Highway Department is looking for funding toward vehicle repair. Article 10 is requesting $16,400 to replace the diesel tank's fuel pump and to repair the brush mower and the Highway Surveyor's truck. And Article 11 is requesting $1,600 for exterior work on the diesel tank, which includes sand blasting and repainting.

Other money articles include Article 1. The Finance Committee had planned to request funding to purchase a Notebook PC for its Clerk. However, at the request of the Finance Committee, the article will be passed over.

Due to a past miscommunication, Article 2 is requesting $232 needed for the Collector/Treasurer salaries.

In an effort to make several repairs around the Town Hall, Article 3 is requesting $1,098 to fix the outside alarm horn and patch a hole in the wallboard going into the downstairs of the building. Article 4 is requesting $2,141 for an upgrade to Town Hall software.

Other articles on the warrant include four articles being brought forward from the Community Preservation Committee, two bylaw amendments from the Planning Board and a bylaw amendment from the Conservation Commission. The complete warrant can be found on the town's Web site at
