Student Artworks on Display in Boston

Twenty students from the Mendon Upton Regional School District have been selected to have their artwork displayed among over 1,000 other pieces at the State Transportation Building in Boston starting this month.

The multi-media exhibit is sponsored by the Massachusetts Art Education Association in conjunction with Youth Art Month, a national celebration that "emphasizes the value of art education for all children and encourages support for the quality art programs in Massachusetts' schools."

Art teachers from around the Commonwealth submitted work from their students in grades K-12, with each teacher carefully choosing five pieces to be displayed in the exhibit. Miscoe Hill School Art teachers Alice Gentili and Jon Hansen, Clough Elementary School Art teacher Alexis Kornblum, and Memorial Elementary School Art teacher Jessica Grady chose the 20 pieces for the show from hundreds of pieces of artwork created by their students throughout this school year. "It is really hard to pare it down to five pieces," said Gentili noting the difficulty of choosing the artwork for the exhibition.

The pieces created by local students will be hung on display in the Youth Art Month exhibit at the State Transportation Building through April 25. The exhibit is open to the public weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed Saturday, Sunday, and Patriots Day, April 21, and admission is free.

The artists whose drawings and paintings were chosen to be displayed were from Clough: Emma Offord, Charley Drew, Lauren Plumb, Dillon Moore, and Jeremy Jordan; from Memorial: Anna Foye, Jack Nealley, and Caroline Brigham, Ben Joseph, and Sean Bailey; and from Miscoe: Sophia Studley, Elizabeth Stallcup, Sara Garwood, Patrick Murphy, Julia Bernero, Samantha Katz, Bret Hackenson, Grady Reardon, Thomas Michel, and Jenna Meleedy.

Gentili said that this annual event is a great way to recognize student's achievements in the area of art. "We have a phenomenal art program in the district, and the exhibit is a good way to show off the terrific work that the students have done this year," she said.
