After-hours Bar Fight Prompts License Hearing

An early morning March 7 fight at the Royal Buddha on Depot St. that occurred after the restaurant should have been closed will result in the owners being called before the Board of Selectmen for a liquor license disciplinary hearing.

Board members discussed the incident with Police Chief Thomas O'Loughlin on March 10, with the chief saying the incident happened at 2:12 a.m. – beyond the 1 a.m. cut-off for serving alcohol and the 1:30 a.m. closing time. O'Loughlin described the incident as follows: Two patrons started fighting. Next, a female bartender stepped in to try to break up the fight. One of the patrons left. The bartender's boyfriend and the owner stepped in, and were assaulted. After calling police, the owner retrieved his firearm and advised the assailant to stop, but was then punched by the assailant.

The owner, who is licensed to carry the weapon, will not be charged with brandishing it, O'Loughlin said. "At that point, he was under threat of serious bodily harm," he said. The chief added, "If he had closed the premises by 1:30 a.m., there would be no incident."

The board voted unanimously to schedule the liquor license hearing at a future date.
