Annual Nipmuc Pops Concert Hits a High Note

The Nipmuc Regional High School Music Department hit a high note with the audience again this year at the annual Pops Concert held on May 21. Choral Director Ann Marie Tremblay and Band Director Michael Morel led over 170 students in a one hour and forty-five minute concert set to keep the audience tapping their toes along with the performances that have brought home numerous awards for the Nipmuc Music Department this year.

The Concert Band opened up the show playing "Superman Returns" and a musically complicated piece "Firedance," (from Riverdance the show); a piece that Morel told the audience the students "really stepped up to the challenge" to play. The Band ended their performance with a crowd-pleasing arrangement from West Side Story.

Along with the concert band, the Pops concert included performances from the Percussion Ensemble, the Wind Ensemble, and the Jazz Ensemble.

The Nipmuc Chorus this year paid tribute to some great American composers such as George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Ben E. King, Paul McCartney, and Harold Arlen during their performances. The Chorus began with singing "Home" and "Over the Rainbow" and ended with singing "Gershwin! A Concert Panorama," which was a compilation of some famous Gershwin tunes. Along with the Chorus, the A Cappella group and the Jazz Choir performed numbers during the concert as well, and all three featured soloists in their performances. Soloists for Concert Choir included Ateha Bailly, Kyle Gazoorian, Emily O'Connell, and Molly King on ukulele. Soloists for the A Cappella group were Seniors Joselyn Melpignano and Jay Turner, Ateha Bailly, and Matt O'Brien. Soloists for Jazz Choir featured Dan Burke-Perez and numerous scat soloists.

The audience listened to the concert from rows of tables set up in the gymnasium, and were treated to light refreshments served by a wait staff consisting of members of the Miscoe Hill Middle School Band and Chorus.

The evening ended with Tremblay and Morel thanking the students, and recognizing the eight seniors in the Music Department who will be pursuing degrees in music performance and music education including Joselyn Melpignano, Arianna Bonito, Rachel Plante, Evan Tamagni, Zach Boudrot, Jake Checkoway, Kevin Harris, and Allie Mercer.

After the concert, Tremblay said that she was pleased with the concert and proud of the students' performances. "The Pops concert is a favorite concert for performers and listeners alike. This year was no different!" she said.
