Warm Weather Means Road Repairs

All winter long, drivers wait for warmer weather, when there is no snow and ice on the road. Then, when warmer weather arrives, it's time for the annual season of road repair and resurfacing.

Highway Surveyor Scott Crisafulli got an extra $122, 593 from the state this year as part of a "Winter Rapid Recovery Road Reimbursable Grant." He outlined how his department is using that money this year:

• Resurfacing parts of Beaver St. near Medway Road (Route 109)

• Resurfacing the "worst" parts of Highland St.

• Chip-sealing parts of Beaver St.

• Various guard rail repairs around town

• Various pothole repairs around town.

With the $1.75 million he has available through the town's budget and the state's Chapter 90 funds, Crisafulli plans the following road work this year:

• Chip-sealing the rest of Beaver St.

• Chip-sealing Haven St. and Maple St.

• Resurfacing Colby Drive, Cook St., Dartmouth Drive, parts of Dilla St., Jackson St., Plain St., Taylor St., Thayer St., and Vassar Drive

Next spring, he .said, the Highway Department plans to tackle:

• Calvin Drive

• Coolidge Road

• DiVittorio Drive

How does he select the roads to be fixed? Crisafulli said it comes down to several factors beyond the overall age and condition of the roadways. You can have a 20-year old road in great condition while a five year-old one is falling apart, he explained. Among the factors he uses in deciding which ones to resurface are: the number of complaints received about a specific road, and plans by the Milford Water Company and electric and gas utilities to replace their underground infrastructure, he said.

As for the Milford Water Company, Manager David Condrey said the privately owned utility will be installing 2,000 linear feet of new water mains on Congress St., West Fountain St. and Bethel Road this summer, as well as extending the water main on Haven St.
