Selectmen Support Abolishing CIC

The Board of Selectmen believes the Capital Improvement Committee (CIC) should be abolished, and is placing an article on the May 23 Annual Town Meeting warrant asking Town Meeting Members to do so.

The board's consensus, reached at its February 10 meeting, follows a meeting with CIC and Finance Committee representatives held last month at which the Finance Committee chair and vice chair and Selectman William Kingkade termed the CIC's budget review process as "redundant."

Chairman Brian Murray brought up the topic, saying his board needed to either abolish the CIC or fill the vacant two positions on it.

"For all intents and purposes, it [the CIC's review] is rolled into the Finance Committee today," commented Selectman William Buckley. "I would like to sponsor an article to abolish the CIC," Kingkade said. "I think it is time for it to go."

Murray agreed, saying, "I don't see the [Capital Improvement] committee offering a whole lot that's different" from what the Finance Committee does." Town Counsel Gerald Moody will be asked to draft the appropriate warrant article, he said.

Buckley voiced concern for those currently serving on the CIC, insisting that they be given first preference to be appointed to any future opening on the Finance Committee.
