Murray Cruises to Sixth Term

Brian Murray cruised into a sixth term on the Board of Selectmen in this past Tuesday's Annual Town Election, beating back challenger Patrick Holland with a 2,276 (63 percent) to 1,305 (36 percent) result. A total of 3,621 people voted in the election, a 21 percent voter turnout.

In the three other contested races, the winners were:

• School Committee: Joseph Morais (2,338 votes) and James Ligor (1,508 votes);

• Park Commission: Paul Pellegrini (2,415 votes); and,

• Board of Library Trustees: John Byrnes (1,810 votes) and Rory D'Allesandro (1,190 votes).

"It was very convincing," Murray said of his victory, thanking all of those who supported him. "I am proud of the campaign that I ran," said Holland. "Now, it is time to come together as a community and work for a better future for Milford."

The town's politicos said one factor that may have damaged Holland's chances was the series of mailers – heavily critical of Murray – that were issued in the last weeks of the campaign. "I took a big swing," Holland said, using a baseball term. "We got a lot of young people involved in the process."

A ballot question – "Shall the Town of Milford cease assessing the excise imposed under General Lawns Chapter 59, Section 8A on certain animals, machinery and equipment owned by individuals and non-corporate entities principally engaged in agriculture?" – passed by a vote of 1,241 to 546.
