Sewer Commission Awards Annual Chemical Bids

The Board of Sewer Commissioners voted on June 21 to award annual contracts for chemicals used in the sewage treatment process to low bidders Carmeuse Lime, Inc. for hydrated lime at $224.99 per ton and Holland Company for polymerized aluminum coagulant (PAC) at $.98 per gallon. Two bidders – Benzsay & Harrison, Inc. and Polydyne, Inc. – submitted identical low bids for supplying liquid polymer at $.38 per wet pound.

Sewer Superintendent John Mainini said both companies' products would be tested. "If one works better than the other, we'll go with that product," he said.

Amanda Cavaliere, project engineer at Tata & Howard, Inc., the Sewer Department's Marlborough-based consulting engineers, told board members that almost-final plans for the wastewater treatment plant's proposed new $5-million sludge thickening facility will be reviewed with Mainini and his staff during the last week in June in preparation for sending the project out to bid.

Questioned by board members, Mainini said there is still a problem with the Geriatric Authority of Milford using so-called "flushable wipes" at its Countryside Healthcare of Milford facility, but noted the nursing/rehabilitation facility is planning to phase out their use. For now, his department has put bricks in a sewer main to prevent the wipes from traveling further in the sewer system and clogging up a pumping station. Each day, a crew goes and cleans them out, Mainini said.

He also gave the board an update on a recent site walk he took to look at where a proposed affordable 300-unit rental apartment complex would be built on East Main St. (Rt. 16). The apartment complex – as with other past projects proposed for that site – would have to be connected to the East Main Street pumping station, which will need to be upgraded to handle the increased flow, Mainini said.
