It was a "great summer" at the Upton Town Library with over 140 kids participating in the 2016 Summer Reading Program - Exercise Your Mind...Read!

"I loved this year's theme and the lineup of events that we had," said Upton Children's Librarian Nicole Claire as the program was wrapping up for yet another year.

The lineup of events this summer was a mix of tried-and-true and new, according to Claire. Some of the popular events that returned this year included the Little Red Wagon Theater Troupe who kicked off the summer with a presentation American Folk Tales, and Lil' Folk Farm's Traveling Petting Zoo where kids could meet, feed, and brush some friendly barn animals.

New to the library this year were some "exciting" events including a demonstration from the two-time Frisbee Freestyle Champion Todd Brodeur, an Elephant and Piggie Storytime Theater featuring Upton Library's own Miss Nicole [Claire] starring as "Piggie," and a teen cooking program with Anna Tourkakis aimed at showing how healthy eating can be fun and delicious.

One new and very popular event held this year was a two-mile walk around the town of Upton searching for Pokemon characters.

"That was very well attended," said Claire about the July 22 event. "We had over 20 kids walking around trying to catch Pokemons," she said.

Claire stated that most of the events held this summer at the library centered on fitness and wellness to match with this year's Exercise Your Mind...Read! theme.

"That's what summer is all about, being active and getting outside," she said. "And reading too!"

Participants in the summer reading program could earn the special prize of free tickets to the August 9 Paw Sox Game by reading any five books, but many exceeded this goal in a huge way.

"We has kids coming in showing that they had read 13 or 15 books," said Clarie. "They were very proud," she said.

Overall, Claire would call this year's Summer Reading Program a success. "I can absolutely look back and say yes, this was a great summer," she said.

Library officials were sure to thank a number of sponsors including JJ's Ice Cream Shoppe, Wegmans of Northborough, UniBank, the Pawtucket Red Sox, the Bellingham Public Library, Friends of Upton Town Library, the staff at Upton Town Library, the summer volunteers, and their patrons.
