Mendon’s 350th Anniversary Kick Off Event September 10

It's been more than a year of planning, but Mendon's 350th Anniversary Committee and the Brothers of the Brush are finally ready to kick off the first of many events to celebrate the town's 350th Anniversary. On Saturday, September 10, a good old New England Ham and Bean Supper will take place at Clough Elementary School beginning at 5 p.m.

The event will not only offer dinner but also other activities for the whole family to enjoy. The menu includes ham and beans (of course) as well as coleslaw, cornbread, drinks and dessert. Committee Secretary Dan Byer, added that a DJ will be playing music to entertain attendees and face painting and caricatures are also part of the fun that evening.

The first event has a little history behind it and was chosen for a reason. At the time of Mendon's 325th Anniversary, the Highway Barn was a brand new building. "Before any of the equipment was moved in, we [the Anniversary Committee] christened it with a town-wide ham and bean supper," explained Committee Co-Chair Kevin Rudden. The 350th Anniversary Committee thought of possibly recreating that same supper at the Highway Barn but realized it would pose too much work for the Highway Department to move all the equipment out. In addition, to due to food handling law regulations now in place, it would not be permitted.

Tickets for the September 10 supper are $5 and are available at the Highway Barn, the Taft Public Library, and the 350th Anniversary Committee. Members of the Brothers of the Brush are also selling tickets. Alternately there is a 350th button for $10 that gets one free admission to the Ham and Bean dinner, discounted admission to the upcoming St. Paddy's day celebration, and additional prizes through a raffle.

Rudden encourages those who have moved into town recently or who never had the opportunity to experience any of the 325th Anniversary Celebrations to attend the events, saying, "Just come to the events and meet people. It's fun."

Mendon' s Brothers of the Brush, known for their long beards and who are fundraising for all the events, are adding to the fun by selling shaving permits for $2. Certain town officials or other public figures spotted at anniversary events without some facial hair or a shave permit risk the chance of a citation or possible "arrest." "It's all in good fun," explained Rudden.
