New Law Allows Early Voting in November

For the very first time, all Massachusetts registered voters will be allowed to cast their vote before the November 8 Election Day if they so choose. Thanks to a new law now in place, early voting can now begin on October 24 in Mendon and Upton.

Prior to the new law, the only way a registered voter was permitted to vote before Election Day was through absentee voting. However, early voting is allowed for all registered voters and will continue for all bi-annual elections. Absentee voting is still permitted. Early voting can be done in person or by mail.

"We're only required to be open for early voting during the Town Hall Clerk's regular business hours," said Mendon Town Clerk Margaret Bonderekno. "However, the state has offered an incentive grant of $250 to have extra hours on weekend." That funding will go toward costs associated with the early voting for the extra election workers needed.

Once a vote has been cast through the early voting process, the voter may no longer vote at the polls on Election Day. Whether or not a resident plans on taking advantage of early voting, utilizing an absentee ballot or voting on Election Day, the first step is to ensure the individual is registered. The deadline to register for the November Election is October 19. To find information on how to register to vote or see if one is registered, visit the Secretary of the Commonwealth's website at www.sec.state.ma.us/ele. To register to vote, visit www.RegisterToVoteMA.com. A license or an I.D. issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles is needed to apply online or visit the Town Hall.
