Mendon Upton School Committee Gets Updates from Superintendent

During a brief School Committee Meeting on Monday, February 27, several school officials gave updates on the recent happenings in the district.

Curriculum Director Maureen Cohen was recognized for recently receiving her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Northeastern University. Cohen received her doctorate in February after successfully defending her doctoral dissertation thesis on leading technological change.

"This is very well deserved," said Superintendent Dr. Joseph Maruszczak. "Maureen [Cohen] is someone who truly walks the walk when it comes to emphasizing life-long learning. I am so fortunate that Maureen is leading this district's curriculum."

Cohen has been the Curriculum Director for the Mendon Upton Regional School District since 2013.

Superintendent Coffee Hours

Maruszczak also announced that as part of his professional practice goal, he will be conducting four coffee hours to listen to parents and/or community members on any issue of their liking. Maruszczak said that although the meeting may be at a particular school, it is open to any parent with children at any of the four schools.

The schedule for the coffee hours are as follows: Memorial Elementary School in Upton on Wednesday, March 15 at 9 a.m.; Clough Elementary School in Mendon on Tuesday, March 21 at 9 a.m.; Miscoe Hill Middle School in Mendon on Thursday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m.; and Nipmuc Regional High School in Upton on Monday, April 3 at 7 p.m.

K-12 Insight Survey

A new K-12 Insight Survey will be conducted once again this year. The survey will be open from May 1 through May 15 and will be given to parents, staff, and middle and high school students.

During the April 10 School Committee Meeting, Maruszczak will be giving a presentation on how the feedback from last year's K-12 Insight Survey was used to effect change in the district.

"The qualitative data that we got back from the survey last year was powerful," said Maruszczak.

FY17 Budget Update

Finally, an update on the FY17 school budget showed no red flags at this point in the year. "All in all, we are in pretty good shape," said Director of Finance and Operations Jay Byer.
