Exciting Changes as Milford Public Schools Begin a New Year

As students are enjoying their last lazy, hazy days of summer vacation, the staff at the Milford Public Schools is hard at work getting ready for the first day of school.

Milford students head back to school on August 30 for grades 1 through 12, and can expect to see some new and exciting changes in the district this year according to school officials.

"We are really excited about this year's Chromebook roll out for grades 6-9," said School Superintendent Dr. Kevin McIntyre. "This is a tool that will help enhance the educational experience for our students."

Last year, students in Woodland Elementary School started using Chromebook laptops during the school day, and this year the Chromebooks will be used at the middle school and high school levels as well.

At the high school, there will also be some new faces greeting the students as they walk through the doors on the first day.

Milford High School (MHS) Principal Joshua Otlin and Assistant Principal Sissela Tucker are new to MHS this year, taking over for Carolyn Banach and Mark McGillvray, respectively. Otlin, a former MHS graduate, came to Milford from Hudson High School, where he was an Assistant Principal. Tucker was an Academic Dean in Providence, Rhode Island before coming to Milford, and was also worked as a Math and Biology Teacher.

At the high school, a number of new programs will also be kicked off this year including a new Business and Banking Program, where students can get hands-on experience in the finance and banking industry at a Milford Federal Bank branch right on their own campus.

And although it won't be as viable to students as these other programs, McIntyre said that a major project for the district this year will be the roll out of a new 3-year Strategic Plan. "It will have an emphasis on engagement in the classroom," he said. "In getting kids excited about learning and coming to school."

Although students in grades 1-12 will lead the way back to school this year, the Preschool and Kindergarteners will quickly follow.

The first day of Shining Star Preschool will be Tuesday, September 5. There will be a Parent Orientation, parents only, for Shining Star Preschool on August 30 from 6 to 8:30p.m. in the Milford High School Auditorium. There will be an Open House for parents and students on August 31. The schedule is as follows: 9 to 9:30a.m. - Green 2 (Mrs. Reed), Blue 5 (Ms. Dias), Orange 3 (Mrs. Segalla); 10 to 10:30a.m. - Red 4 (Mrs. Reed), Orange 2 (Mrs. Segalla), Orange 2 (Ms. Leland); 11 to 11:30a.m. - Orange 3 (Ms. Leland), Green 3 (Mrs. Reed), Purple 4 (Mrs. Riordian).

Kindergarten students will start on Thursday, September 7 with an orientation on September 6.
