Mendon’s New Town Clerk to be Determined May 15

Mendon residents will determine who will serve as the new Town Clerk during the May 15 Town Election. The three-year Town Clerk's position is the only race on this year's ballot.

After serving in the Town Clerk's position for the last 18 years, Margaret Bonderenko will be retiring soon. Running for the office are Ellen Agro and Jody Kurczy. In addition to determining the outcome of the Town Clerk's race, a ballot question concerning whether or not the position will be elected or appointed by the Board of Selectmen will also be decided on.

Article 16 on the May 4 Town Meeting warrant is asking voters to determine whether or not the Town Clerk's position should now be appointed by the Board of Selectmen versus elected by the voters. If the article passes at the town meeting, it would also need to be approved through a ballot vote during the May 15 election. Town Administrator Kim Newman says if the measure is passed, the Selectmen will likely follow the will of the voters and appoint the elected person until her term expires.

All other offices on the Town Election ballot are unchallenged and include Chris Burke for the three- year Board of Selectman's seat. Resident Charles Scharnagle was planning to run against Burke for the seat but withdrew his nomination papers.

Other candidates include Jay Byer for the one year Moderator's seat, Thomas Fichtner for the Board of Health for three years, Kevin Rudden for the Assessor's seat for three years, Leigh Martin for the Mendon Upton Regional School District School Committee

for three years, James Quirk for the Planning Board's five year seat, Thomas Belland for Park Commissioner for three years, Mary Garagliano for the Housing Authority's five year seat, Kelley Aubut for the Taft Public Library Trustee's three year seat, and Matthew O'Brien for the Water Commissioner's three year seat.

Mendon's Town Election will take place at Miscoe Hill School. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Annual Town Meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 4 and will take place at Miscoe Hill School and begin at 7 p.m.
