Town Officials Looking for Input to Rename Former Library

During a brief discussion during an April 23 meeting, it was brought to the attention of the Board of Selectmen that the former library remains without a name. Dan Byer, Director of Parks and Recreation, discussed the matter with the Board during the citizens' statements and petitions portion of the agenda.

After a year-long renovation of the former St. Michael's Church, the new Taft Public Library opened its doors in June 2016; its former Main St. location is now being used as municipal offices. "I'm

curious what would be the appropriate process to give it some sort of name instead of calling it the old library," questioned Byer, who noted there has been a suggestion to call it the Rosa Taft Municipal Building, but nothing has been confirmed.

Selectman Mark Reil stated he has some reservations about having two municipal buildings with the word Taft in them. "You call it the Rosa Taft Municipal Building, people are going to shorten it and call it the Taft Municipal Building and now you have the Taft Library and the Taft Municipal Building," he said. "I'm just worried there's going to be confusion about which building

are we going to. I'm just thinking two building with Taft could cause an issue."

Byer explained that Rosa Taft purchased the 18 Main St. building and donated it

to the town to be used as a library. "She's different from the Taft that the library is named after; she's a different generation of Tafts," he said.

Town Administrator Kim Newman said it would be a good idea to ask residents their thoughts on renaming the building. Selectmen Chair Chris Burke said he's open to suggestions but would also like to hear from the Historical Commission on the matter. Resident Jay Byer, who was also

in attendance at the meeting, suggested information about renaming the building be distributed at the Town Meeting in order to reach more residents.

Anyone with suggestions can email a Selectman through the town's Web site or send in a written suggestion to: Town of Mendon, 20 Main St., Mendon, 01756, Attn: Board of Selectmen.

In other news that evening, the Board appointed two new members to the Capital Planning Committee. Jay Byer and Matthew O'Brien were unanimously appointed that evening with their terms set to expire June 30, 2019.
